About the Practice
Our goal is to provide excellence in care for all our patients. We strive to improve our technique and the care we deliver every day. Although we see general orthopaedic patients our subspecialty interest is in the area of Total Joint Replacement. Dr. H. Dr. Bertram has been recognized for his excellence in surgery, specifically Total Joint Replacement Surgery, by his patients and his peers. This is the combination you want in a surgeon if you need Total Joint Surgery. An innovator, Dr. Bertram has developed instruments and techniques currently used in total joint surgery by other surgeons around the country. A teacher, Dr. Bertram has been asked by major implant companies to teach other surgeons techniques in total joint surgery. Dr. Bertram is familiar with and performs “minimally invasive” surgery of the hip and knee.
As a lecturer, Dr. Bertram was invited by Stryker Orthopaedics to present his experience with the “High Performance Total Hip” at a regional meeting in Orlando, Florida in October of 2005 and a national meeting in Houston, Texas at Minute Maid Park on May 11, 2006. In September 2006 he spoke in Atlanta about Total Hip Replacement surgery to a large group of Orthopaedic Surgeons from the entire Southeastern U.S. He was asked to speak as Johnny Bench’s surgeon, and as a leader in total hip surgery. The combination of the Accolade stem from Stryker, and the Ceramic bearing surface or the newest version of plastic (X3) is being recognized as a hard combination to beat. It is allowing many of our patients to walk unassisted (without a cane or walker) at 2 weeks out from surgery. Golf as early as 6 weeks out from surgery is not unheard of and jogging as much as 3 miles per day is allowed in some patients. Dr. Bertram was also asked to speak in Boston at the New England Baptist Hospital in November of 2005 on his results with the Accolade stem from Stryker. He also spoke on the use of Platelet gel, as a way to avoid blood transfusion in Total Knee Replacement.
One of the most exciting advances in Total Joint Surgery in years is what Dr. Bertram is calling his “Accelerated Recovery Technique”. Dr. Bertram has been invited by Exactech, an orthopedic company based in Gainesville, Florida to speak on this accelerated recovery technique nationally three times in 2007. This is a sophisticated combination of modalities and techniques that allow patients to avoid wound healing problems, nearly eliminate the need for a blood transfusion, return to more normal function faster than ever before, and significantly decrease the hospital stay. The most important part of the technique is that with proprietary pain management techniques, the pain after surgery is less than ever before, with 90% of the patients taking only pills by mouth for the pain after surgery. Some patients are leaving the hospital after 1.5 days postop. Our patients are receiving compliments from other patients that are amazed at their rapid recovery. Imagine a 92 year old lady getting rid of her cane 2 weeks after Total Hip Surgery. That is what we are seeing.
