New Technologies: Bertram Hip Spacer

Hip Spacer for Infection of Total Hip

Hip Spacer Temporary Prosthesis invented by Dr. Bertram, helps patients to ambulate while the infection is being treated. Before this they were essentially wheelchair confined for 8 weeks. The redo surgery is made much easier by the spacer.

Sterilization Options for the Bertram Hip Spacer Molds

The recommended process is a Cold Sterilization Process, either Sterrad or Gas Sterilization. If Gas is used, the molds should aerate for 24 hours. Another option would be Cidex solution for 30 minutes, rinsed with sterile water as per routine. Do not put these molds in a conventional autoclave, as they will melt and destroy the molds. Do not push them into the washer/sterilizer machine, the same thing will occur.

We have used all these processes several times without compromise of sterility, and without damage to the wax mold device.
